Milan is a city with something to discover at every turn, from the architectural splendor of the cathedral to the glittering shop windows of the fashion district, from the silence of Renaissance churches to the hustle and bustle of bustling squares. This city is a blend of a glorious past and a fast-paced present, and you will encounter many different faces of it on this one-day tour.
In “Milan, Step by Step Between Art and History,” we start in Piazza del Duomo, wander through covered galleries and historic palaces, hear the sound of music at La Scala, and experience the splendor of power at the Sforza Castle. We see (or hear about) the Last Supper, relax in Sempione Park, and finally, stroll through the city’s artistic or commercial districts.
The tour ends with an evening meal in one of the city’s lively squares, where Milan will take its place in your mind, not as a fashion capital, but as a living and human city.
We start the day in one of the most magnificent squares in Italy: Milan Cathedral Square. This open, paved, and bustling square is a place where city life, history, and tourism beautifully blend. The sound of footsteps, pigeons, and the quiet presence of tourists in front of the stunning facade of the church are the first images of Milan that we capture in our minds.
In the center of the square, the magnificent building of Milan Cathedral, with its hundreds of statues, pointed spires, and white marble facade, draws us in like a gigantic statue. Inside, soft light shines through stained glass, and its tall columns, vaulted ceilings, and semi-darkness inspire a sense of reverence and grandeur.
Visiting time: about 1 hour
From inside the church, we continue to the stairs or elevator to the roof. The roof of the church, with its stone sculptures, paved paths and open space, is one of the most special places in Milan. Here we can walk among the minarets and see the city from above: brick roofs, domes, towers, and in the distance, if the weather is clear, the Alps.
This experience is not only a spectacular view, but also an opportunity to appreciate the breathtaking architectural details of this church from a different angle.
Visiting time: about 45 minutes
We leave the Duomo and enter one of the oldest shopping malls in Europe: the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This covered passageway, with its glass arch, mosaic floors and luxury shops, is like a museum of the splendor of modern Milan. We walk among Italian brands, classic coffee shops and shiny shop windows, immersing ourselves in its luxurious and historic atmosphere.
At the end of the gallery, we reach the La Scala Theater; one of the most famous opera houses in the world. Its exterior is simple, but authentic and historic. If possible, visit the interior museum, where you can take a look at the performance hall and backstage.
Visiting time: about 45 minutes
We are now in the heart of the city, where everyday Milanese life blends with historic architecture, chic shops and open-air cafes. We stop for lunch at one of the traditional restaurants around the square.
The menu includes handmade pastas, Milanese risotto, meat dishes with rich sauces and famous Italian desserts. It is a chance to relax, chat and enjoy the authentic flavors and atmosphere of Milan.
Duration: About 1 hour
After lunch, we head to one of Milan’s most iconic castles: the Sforza Castle. Once the residence of the royal family, this historic fortress is now a magnificent and spectacular sight with its towers, brick courtyards, and grand gates. We stroll through its courtyards and hear about the building’s political history, wars, and reconstructions.
Next, we enter the Sempione Park, a pleasant green space behind the castle, with walking paths, a small lake and a view of the Arc de Triomphe. This park is a great opportunity to take a short break, take photos or even have a light coffee in one of the cafes inside the grounds.
Visiting time: about 1 hour
Next, we head to one of the city's most important cultural landmarks: the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. With its brick facade, serene interior, and Renaissance design, this church has been home to one of the masterpieces of art history for many years: Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper.
If advance reservations are available, we can enter the special hall and sit in silence and respect to admire this extraordinary mural. Even if we do not enter, being in the church grounds and learning about its history will be a valuable experience.
Visiting time: about 45 minutes
In this part of the tour, depending on the group's taste, we choose one of two routes:
Route 1: The Brera neighborhood, with its cobblestone streets, art galleries, unique boutiques, and local artistic scene. Strolling through the alleys of this neighborhood is an opportunity to discover a more cultural side of Venice.
Route 2: Milan's fashion district, including streets like Monte Napoleone, which are filled with famous brands, chic shops, and a contemporary face of Milan.
Both routes present a different and complementary face of the city.
Visiting time: about 45 minutes
To end this fascinating day, we stop in one of the central squares of Venice, such as Piazza San Babila or again in Piazza del Duomo, and order a drink and dessert at an outdoor café. This is a place to review the memories of the day, watch the crowds, hear the church bells or a street musician, and end a tour that leaves a memorable image of Milan in our minds.
